I'm shocked it hasn't been started yet.

Here's an old pic of me at Yellowstone, after waiting 45 minutes for food. Guess which one I am:

I loved that book as a child. And now my daughter just asked me last week if I had read it. We talked about it for a long time.

I love the photo, G. What kind of bird is that?

I'll try to get someone else behind the camera for a shot or two this week at the beach. The last photo I posted of myself is almost 10 years old now.

What species of bird is it? Can't be a crow, it seems too small (the crows around here are rather large).

I learned this spring that canadian geese can hiss. Especially when they think you're getting too close to their young. Not entirely surprising, I've had cockatiels hiss at me before. And poop on my shoulder, but that's a story for another day.

Grunthos

It's a fledgling common crow; small because still young. We got a pair (one for my sister, one for me) by placing an ad in the newspaper. A groundskeeper at a local cemetary netted them for us shortly after they had left the nest.

In a creative brainstorm of truly biblical proportions, I decided to call him "Jimmy." Dad ruled out my first choice ("Frightful", of course) as he was already concerned with the reaction of the neighbors.

Oh, bad pics incoming!

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p223/shadyhugs/wakulla.jpg
Me and the girls at Wakulla Springs. Oh, and my camera. I never leave home without it! BTW, it was hot as fuck that day, and there was very little breeze.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p223/shadyhugs/oyster.jpg
We bought about 30 dozen oysters (live, in shell) the day before the 4th and set up a shucking station in the back yard. The cooler next to me has half of those oysters in it. The white bucket is to dump the top shells into, and the red bucket is to rinse the silt off the shells before shucking so they won't be so gritty when eaten. Not shown is the array of hot sauces, horseradish, crackers, lemons, and cocktail sauce I brought out so we could eat them as we shuck.

The shuckers (Zapa and me) got first choice of eating. =p We also made some baked oysters on the half shell with lots of garlic butter and parmesan cheese served with garlic toast. Man, that was a good day. The oysters were better than they've been since the two bigger hurricanes of 2004 (?). Ivan and Dennis I think?

But, as I said it was so hot outside I had to wear my awesome pink skull & X-bone bandanna in a gay way to prevent sweat from seeping into my eyes. Hard to wipe your forehead and eyes when your hands are covered with oyster muck!

Also, note the sailboat behind me with trees growing out of the hull (not the white wooded stalks from the background, just the green saplings). That was my dad's sailboat which hasn't moved from that spot since he died. Wirk and I have decided it's a shame and we are going to clean it, have it refinished, get new rigging and start using it. She's still seaworthy and the hardware is still in tact. She just needs new lines and to be refinished once we clean her. We're going to paint the hull black and name her "Shady's Revenge" with a skull & x-bone. She's going to be our cheesy little pirate boat! Hopefully we can do that next year. She's a 15' 1972(?) O'Day day sailor, and I <3 her.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p223/shadyhugs/boat.jpg
Me on the boat in the sun with my Calcutta sunglasses. They have a skull & x-bone at the temples and are probably the best pair of polarized glasses I have ever owned. Polarized glasses are a must-have in the bay to watch for sandbars and see the skate and sting ray and anything else without the glare on the water. See how choppy the water is in the background? It was slick as glass when we went out, not an hour before.

I have a "good" (relative) picture of me and wirk crabbing that same week, but I'm not sure if he would approve. Also, I look fat in it so....

Shady

This picture has a small story (yeah, they all do. Shaddup).

We went to this small beach area, which isn't really a beach but there's sand and water so I guess it qualifies. We went to go crabbing, something that none of the people we went with have ever done before. So we bought some chicken necks and backs, some string and a knife and went down to that sad little beach. It has the best crabbing in the area.

Anyway, I asked wirk to go find a few rocks and sticks while I got the chicken and string ready. He really did not understand what I was doing and would repeatedly ask me "wtf are you doing? how do you catch crabs with that?" Of course, I wouldn't answer and would continue what I was doing.

The plan for crabbing in this spot is to tie some chicken--raw or cooked--to a string, weight it down with a rock or something, throw it out into the water, and tie the end of the string to a stick and dig that into the sand. Wait about 15 or 20 minutes, and then pull the string in very, very slowly. As you pull, the crabs are unaware because they are eating this huge meal. When you get the chicken and crabs close enough, you scoop up the whole thing in a net. Put the crabs in a holding cage in the water and repeat.

So wirk got the idea after I put one crab line in and got about 3 crabs on it. In this picture he has decided that we need as many crab lines as possible and he is making them all. I am grinning because he is actually having a good time!

Oi, her dad lives just off of Eglington actually and just about any location is just a hop, skip, and jump away via TTC. I have to say, I've been to many cities and Toronto probably has the greatest public transit system out of all of them. Was my.... third or fourth time up there anyway. Always good times. I'll probably be back up there in December so maybe keep in touch. Her dad's girlfriend lives in Oakville actually (methinks) and we're always taking visits down to the UofT campus for walks and stuff so when I'm around I tend to hang out in Mississauga.

As for the beard... that's kinda varies. The fluff on my chin was a couple weeks, but the rest was a couple days. Right now I've got a full beard though that puts that one to shame. FYI though, I had facial hair in like.... 5th grade, so it's kinda genetic with me.

Anthony! (I don't remember if we were on a first name basis)

Yeah, thats how I get around when I travel to Toronto. Driving is a pain in the ass, and parking is hell too, so many fucking places charge. I normally just train it down with the handy dandy P.O.P Go Train pass... And yeah, Oakville, and the 905 area in general has alot of growth (Not now, most of Oakville is developed now) but it's super rich and nice compared to some parts just because businesses and stuff were driven out of Toronto for some reason I don't remember anymore. Now, it must be the garbage everywhere (Lie... Its not actually that bad. Any media on it, just zooms on all the bags piled in like basketball courts or whatever)

I was in Mississauga for Warped Tour :D And UofT is pretty awesome. I'm considering them, but I'm not too sure what other universities have good English programs.

Lucky ass. I want a beard. My dads side has no problem... They all have stalin-ish moustaches within a matter of days/weeks. My mom's side has a little bit of trouble, but they still have the morning stubble and can grow it with time. Dunno where that leaves me, but I'm just not shaving for a few weeks. After some months, if people keep saying "Are you trying to grow a beard?" I'll go for the clean shaven look

Wellllllllllll.... I don't really remember your real name! D:

I've never taken the Go train, but my girlfriend lives about two hours out in Belleville... so have to take VIA rails to Union an awful lot. Otherwise we just stay with her dad in the city. I was gunna go to UofT myself for medical school, but then I changed my major and a university down here offered me a shit ton of financial aid to go to their place... so I'm down here another two years and after I have my bachelor's I'll be up in Toronto. Fun fun fun. You guys have silly news up there though on tv. What's that one.... Breakfast Television? That's not typical news, no, but it's still goofy. The rest of the news keeps a good tally of the homicide rate in Toronto and things like that. Like... almost obsessively. Bwahaha, I was up there for new years and like... IMMEDIATELY after the celebration died over new years they came on the news and were like, "Well, Toronto had its first murder of the year last night..."

I've got the same story with my family, really. My dad's side is like... big viking beards. It's kind of intimidating. My mom's side... I'm really not sure the capacity to grow facial hair for them, because they all shave on a regular basis and none of them really care for beards and stuff like that. So who knows. I'm still workin on mine too, after all.

Finally found this pic again; one of my favorite pics of myself for some reason; just feels like "me" to me.

Of course, it's damn old. The location is Georgia (the Marine detachment at Ft Gordon in Agusta, to be precise), so the year has to be 1983.

& I'd be 20 or 21, depending on the month.

My completed senior design project. Yes, it can fly (6 successful flight tests so far). Oh, and that's me on the left.

It's designed to maximize payload-to-empty weight. So if it seems ugly and rather simplistic, that's because it is. 84 inch wingspan with a 58 inch fuselage length, and it can carry more than its own weight in payload (over 6.5 pounds). I can give more details/pics if anyone's interested.

Interesting airfoil cross-section... cambered? What's the NACA number for it?

Edmaster
05-09-2010, 12:28 AM
Good eye, G. It's a NACA 9514 (http://www.worldofkrauss.com/foils/320). We were the first year to have a laser cutter available to extrude our materials (balsa and light ply, mostly), so a highly-cambered wing wasn't much harder to construct than a flat-bottomed one. Just took a bit longer to get the monokote on.

I'll have to dig up and scan one from back in my monokote-slinging days... Started out flying sailplanes in Palm Springs during my service days, then got involvled in electrics for a while a few years after I got out. Built a ton of balsa and tissue rubber-motored planes when I was a youngun, too.
