I've been dabbling with the new Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia game, but much more than that I managed to sign up for the free download beta of League of Legends.
And it. Kicks.... you know.
The matchmaking system is random, so if you get stuck with crappy players you can't do anything about it, but the gameplay is so fun and the character roster is so vast that you're not even likely to care. Plus, more champions can be bought in store from points you get by playing the game.
This is the game that is sucking my life-force, and I LOVE IT FOR IT.

Dragon Age: Origins, which swallowed me up for a bit more than a week (waaaay too many hours spent on it). Decent game from an RPG mechanics perspective. But it requires you to pause the game repeatedly in order to defeat encounters in normal mode, which gets tedious and annoying after a while. On the other hand, the casual (ie, easy) mode is far too easy, allowing you to simply walk up to monsters and hack away with no thought to strategy or preparation. I'd have preferred a better group AI allowing for less on-hands control but still requiring that you pay attention to the group and the situation.
The plot and story are generic but the character interaction is very well done. There are some glitches, and for the sake of the main plot your decisions will serve the story no matter what path you decide to take, which limits the game's replayability to investigating different choices from the multiple-choice prompts that pepper your conversations. The various characters are fairly well fleshed out, although it doesn't take long for you to get used to the idea that every character is keeping something from you (and not very well, at that).
A fun game that doesn't run out of steam until you're finished with your first play-through, so it's worth the price.

Beat the main story of God of War III tonight. Took me three days. Oh boy, what a game. Amazing, stunning visuals. I went into it thinking it would suck, but it proved me wrong. Great gameplay, aside from a few spots where you die and repeat the process. Definitely worth a rent, maybe even a buy. I can see it having some replayability. They can't see that well fortunately, so you should be able to slip by them. Their range of vision is very limited. Also, the guy at the gate can be bribed to open the gate for ten rupees, though climbing the vines further back would be cheaper. IT's really inside the castle that gets people, it takes a bit more timing in that regard. First block's easy to get past with one guard, and the second part has two guards walking around two square structures , and it would be best to wait until both guards are at the intersection towards the back. After that is another easy one where you can just walk over the headboard and the guard won't see you (unless you want the rupees, then this becomes slightly trickier), and the last one can be annoying, and there are several openings and catches, but it's really up to you to determine that. Just watch how they move. Princess Zelda won't kick you out.
I can't believe I did that by memory. I need to get out more.

You know, I HATE when amnesia is used to conveniently explain away anything to do with memories or someone's "mysterious past." Such a lazy plot device. Goddammit.
Oh, and right after that, they fall back on:
separating you from a strong boss character while simultaneously forcing one of your party members to immediately separate from you with all your equipment still attached as a sacrifice (BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!). The buggers.
And the writers did this same plot device not once, but TWICE. Only the second time, you just need to defeat another planet worth of Sith before you can defeat the villain and save your retarded party member.
"Oh no, a locked door separates us from the evil villain that we've been trying to defeat this entire time! Even though you've already defeated him twice in the past 5 minutes, and you've broken/smashed/hacked your way into countless locked doors before this one, LET'S LEAVE AND GO TO THIS PLANET TO FINISH OUR ZELDA-LIKE QUEST FOR AN ANCIENT, EVIL WEAPON THAT WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. :DDD:

Played Bayonetta for a few hours yesterday. Meh. Excellent graphics and visual effects, good control scheme, the bullet-time effect is a lot of fun... but the game gets in its own way far too often. Do I really need a cut scene every few minutes? Really? Even some of the battles switch between player-controlled combat and a cinematic! Why do I have to watch a cut scene of the character killing a bunch of goons in order to save a child, when I could be battling those goons myself?!?!?!?
The worst part about it is that the story is told in such a disjointed manner that you're not really interested in it. It's an old classic (person awakes with no memories of who they are, embarks on journey of discovery with enemies all around) but it's handled horribly. (And the dialogue, god help us...) Even if you want to ignore the story and play the game, your game play keeps coming to a sudden (and very obnoxious) halt in order to update the badly-plotted story. Argh.

Same. And this is coming from someone who has beaten MGS 1, 2, 3, plus VR missions, big boss mode, collected all the dog tags, etc. and still I haven't bothered to complete MGS4, even though it's sitting at my brother's house right now, and I could be playing it in 60 minutes if I really wanted.

Yeah, your mileage may vary when it comes to cutscenes.
Regarding Bayonetta, it is not the cutscenes per se. It is the overly intrusive manner in which they're used. They're inserted everywhere. Literally every few minutes, your game play is paused for anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. Sometimes it's done to advance the awful plot with bad dialogue. Often it is done right in the middle of an action sequence, such as while you're running through an area, or in between packs of enemies. It totally wrecks the flow.
And there are even more scenes where you get to watch the main character attack and kill enemies, something that could easily have been given to the player to do. Heck, there is one scene where you watch a cutscene of Bayonetta killing some enemies, then you get to control her and kill some others, then you go back to a cutscene as she finishes a few more. WHAT?!?!?!?
The game just intrudes upon itself way too much. Other games I've played that had lots of cutscenes (Fable II, Dragon Age: Origins) handled them very well. The scenes advanced the story without elbowing you out of the way all the time. Bayonetta is someone's warped idea of interactivity. It's all the more aggravating because the control scheme is very good and a lot of fun.

Also watched a walk-through for Goldeneye 007 for the Wii, the guy had no idea what he was doing, so I didn't feel the exploration options were spoiled all that much. They also modernized the story a little. It had a bit of a less personal impact in that regard, but it helped the game stand on its own rather than assuming we had seen the movie. I'll have to play it myself to get a true feel of it.

Still hooked on Bad Company 2. Managed to do something tonight on Port Valdez Conquest that I haven't been able to pull off since the demo was released... tl;dr inbound.
So I was in the cockpit of the Apache as usual, just taking off off from the helipad, when an enemy pops out and manages to get a tracer dart on me. No problem, I kill the guy with a couple Hydra rockets and I fly away to avoid anyone else trying to get a quick lock-on. Well, lucky for that guy (or someone else on his team, who knows), a few seconds later someone did manage to get a lock-on and fired off a missile.
So at this point, I'm pretty screwed because it's nearly impossible to dodge these things- you can't simply outrun them as they're faster than your helo's top speed and have a pretty decent amount of fuel before they fizzle out- bailing is really your only option. But I was a tad pissed off because this was the enemy's helicopter that I had stolen (I was on the Russian side), so bailing would mean the enemy would get their helo back and we'd lose our air superiority. So a combination of that and blind rage at the guy who locked onto me led me to A.) shoot the guy who fired the SAM with a couple more Hydras, while B.) jinking and diving like a madman while the missile lock warning was blaring in my face. Another second passed by and I'm still alive, scraping the tree tops and just barely avoiding the buildings and powerlines around me as I blindly dive and turn as sharp as I can. I can see the missile's streak through my cockpit, following my trail like a hound on a rabbit chase, and at this point I'm starting to think I might actually pull this off. A couple seconds later, the missile fizzled out and I was left alive, victorious, and with a gunner who was literally screaming into my headset "holy shit holy shit how did you pull that off???"
I bet the guy who fired that missile was pretty pissed, too, considering he was dead and I was alive, and still in control of THEIR Apache.

Kefka's not greedy, just cruel.
I like a good honest character, heroes and villains with backstories have gotten dry and unempathetic. Sephiroth is a good villain, just annoyingly melodramatic and flamboyant, a good portion of his dialogue insisting that Cloud has penis envy. Though I wouldn't go so far as to say Seph's a 'Mama's Boy'.
Kefka creates his own motivations, rather than waiting for something else to drive him mad other than experimental brain damage.
w8WH4uxmiF8
There is some emotion hidden in this little scene that's easy to miss. Strangely, it seems Kefka's one of the few villains in the entire series that has any emotional depth at all, he just hides it behind the madness. He's a Lawful nihilist. He didn't get broken to believe in that philosophy, rather, that philosophy broke him. He drove himself mad, which makes him a surprisingly complex character for those who seek that sort, yet at the same time, a simple character for those who prefer face value and classic villainy. He is a very well-designed character.

w8WH4uxmiF8Consequentially, Final Fantasy VI has this huge middle school level Nihilism vs. Existentialism thing going on I could talk about but won't.
Personally, I think a lot of character writing these days has become artificially deep. Everyone has a tragic past, a misunderstood motivation, a childhood dream gone horribly wrong. We justify this by telling ourselves that because it's complicated it must be deep, that it's still "Better than if they were cardboard cut-outs."
Better is a relative term; better does not mean good.
People aren't like this. Yeah, every now and then you'll come across a genuinely tragic villain, but most bad guys here in the real world are either severely deluded or blatantly transparent.
Coincidentally, this is probably one of the big reasons why Skies of Arcadia's Galcian really works for me as a villain. He doesn't have a tragic past or philosophical rock in his shoe; he's simply another ambitious human being, one who pragmatically views power as the only dependable constant in a world of fickle morality. The man doesn't even feel the need to lecture on it like most JRPG villains, he just calls it like he sees it (to one character, in one sentence, in one optional flashback). Most of the men under his command even think he's doing the world a favor by attempting to unify it, even if it is for admittedly selfish reasons.
Galcian might not have been as developed as other JRPG villains, but he certainly felt a lot more real to me, and thus was easier to take seriously.

Yes, and you can make a realistic character in even the most unlikely of fantasy settings. In Legacy of Kain for example, we have the aristocratic Kain as our "Hero", and he has absolutely no lllusions of such. Indeed, he is quick to correct someone claiming to go after him or his kind by aptly pointing out their delusions of grandeur, masking their bloodlust in a shroud of righteousness. Kain isn't much like the average person you'd meet today, but rather one of those ballsy characters from Biblical times. As a character, he isn't entirely "Complex", but rather an intelligent barbarian throwing wrenches into the main villains' carefully choreographed plot.
Thing about Kain is, while he's not someone you'd want running around for fear of sudden death, but he has a character trait that many envy, which is a highly keen bullshit detector. He has not a single inkling of an idea that he's any morally better than the rest of the world, indeed, prefers honest hatred rather than the carefully explained Freudian excuse many like to come up with. If there is anything Kain teaches as a moral, it's honesty. He may not be a good character, but many people may find things about him they relate with.
This is why sometimes good, honest villainy is preferably to a wide-spanning series of unlikely unfortunate events driving the villain to angst. Sephiroth is a good villain, but his motivations are pretty whacked out after a while. At first he's very much right to be angry what with the experiments and the Jenova, thinking he was the last descendant of a righteous race before humanity started destroying the world. But when he finds out the truth of the truth, he just kinda' says "Meh", rolls with it, and becomes Omnicidal. It makes me wonder if he was just omnicidal to begin with and was seeking justification. In which case, Kefka's life philosophy in and of itself was all the justification he felt he needed. And Kuja, who was pretty much doing his job until he snapped upon learning his limited lifespan. Even those fantasy settings reach out to the right chords. But when gambits start piling on gambits piling on gambits, the audience really doesn't give a damn at a certain point. Ironically, in Dissidia, Sephiroth's character was given very little depth at all other than constantly pointing out Cloud's implied shortcomings again. Sephiroth got one little good philosophical gem, but it was in text rather than a cutscene.
I do like Golbez though, cape and character.
Also, just got around to collecting all of the golden bugs in twilight princess. I almost completely missed them in the desert.

I think that most of the characters that you are referring to as "complex" are really just "complicated." And it isn't nearly the same thing. You can make a very complex character with a very basic foundation of past history and motivation(s). The importance is in providing sufficient freedom to allow the character to develop, and a basic and simple starting point does that just fine.
Compare the simple origins and later development of Bruce Banner and the Hulk, then look at the hideous mess they made of it in the first film. Then they went back to basics with the remake, and presto-- an awesome film that told a simple story awesomely.

Watching a walkthrough of Final Fantasy XIII, about an hour in now. I noticed an interesting combination of themes. It has both an emotional/serious lead like the newer games(Sans Tidus, who was emotional and silly) in Lightning, and an altruistic/Good-hearted hero like the older games in Snow. I like Snow best so far.
Again, it displays FF's visual convenience of showing who the main characters are by how insane they dress during times of war. A good example is Snow's entire fighting group, which is a paramilitary organization filled with young, scantily clad fighters of various appearances, all of which display their goodies. Snow himself, oddly, is the most modestly dressed.
The enemies, of course, are faceless mooks wearing appropriate uniforms. I haven't seen the lead enemy yet, but I'm sure he/she'll make quite a presentation.

Final Fantasy.. the only game that ever has a chance of outlasting World of Warcraft. I remember when I was like 13 playing FFX, it was pretty good but I never beat it. I got to the part where you fight the dragon on the ship when going to rescue Yuna.
Anyways, I'm currently playing Vanquish which is pretty sick but also a bit tedious and repetitive. I'm also so playing Castlevania Lords of Shadow which is already one of my favorite games this year, and I'm only on chapter 3 of 12. If you're looking for a good hack'n'slash game look no further, this game is amazingly fun to play, has awesome mechanics and puzzles and on top of that has the best graphics I've seen to date of any game for console, topping God of War 3(and hell, this game blows God of War 3 out of the water in all aspects anyways).

I got stuck on the robot thing. It fucked my shit up every time. Then again, I was like 10 so I didn't really know anything about building a balanced character, and the leveling system confused the shit out of me.
Yeah I remember the leveling system was confusing as hell too. I stopped playing the game for like six months and came back and I somehow had a revelation and understood it completely afterwards, and it turns out I had like 99X of each of those items you needed to level up too. The guy that confused the shit out of me when I was young was the big Slim Blob thing that changed what magic it was effected by and it healed if you hit it with the wrong one or something.. oh the rage.

Was playing The Sims 3 (Xbox 360) for the last week or so. Going back into the DC Universe Online beta (PS3) now. Also bought the dog breed pack for Fable III so no doubt I'll be back on that. Been eyeballing Rock Band 3 as it sits on my shelf, thinking of playing it. Also looking to play a little Borderlands (Xbox 360) with one of you, if you want. And Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare (Xbox 360) multiplayer if anyone has that.

Yeah man I'm so surprised it didn't get better ratings. Not only is it amazing but it has like, a 15 + hour single player with a good difficulty to boot

Enjoyable with good teammates, just like BC2. I just wish the UH-1 had a BIT more armor. It's not much stronger than BC2's UAV, imo.
But still it has just enough armor that it's worth flying for ~30 seconds, grabbing a half dozen kills or so before it gets shot down by small arms fire, at which point I can eject and parachute down, dropping rockets and grenades at the enemy below me.
Yes.

Yes.
If you're flying NEVER EVER go without 2 engies in the back and two guys on the guns as well. And take the extra armour package as well, really does help. Keep high and fast, nothing can hit you.
Except tanks.
Fuck tanks.

* Divinity 2 Dragon Knight Saga Version (actually not bad, was a steal on steam for 4 bucks given the crazy holiday deals essentially giving away 30+ dollar games for nothing. I miss a lot of the zany self-aware Tolkein riffing humor of "Beyond Divinity" and "Beyond Divinity 2" that is missing in Divinity 2 - it is there just not as rib busting e.g. no skeletons that have an existential crisis and go poof... but rightfully acknowledges predesessors in the series with some great cameos)
* Phantasy Star Portable 2 (commute entertainment)
* Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (I need to fucking finish it this weekend)
* Vanquish (just started last weekend. It is insanely gorgeous and fun but aiming control even on highest sensitivity setting isn't accurate - may try lowering to lowest level to see if it offers an improvement)
* Fallout: New Vegas (PC version, always try to get in at least 2 hours each week... though the first hour is usually spent browsing the new mods from the nexus network (e.g. newvegasnexus.com)
Unfinished I need to get back into:
* Red Dead Redemption Zombie DLC (never finished it, thought it was meh)
* Yakuza 3 (damn shame, need to go back and get that one done)
* EAT THEM (grabbed it on PSN because it looked like a long overdue Rampage update... not so much, but it is ok. On fence whether this was a waste of five bucks.)

I'm watching Tobuscus play through that on YouTube and it doesn't seem extremely scary from my viewpoint. However, I bet actually playing it is quite freaky.

That's cause he's a retard who doesn't play it like it should be played. He has the sound super low, and he's talking to people half the time. Try playing it in a dark room with good headphones and just focus on the game. It's nuts.
