And others are apparently available on craigslist (and I'm sure other places).

It's a movement called "steampunk."

steampunk is a kind of alternate future fantasy, positing that fossil fuels were never discovered or used for energy, and that technology progressed down the line of steam power rather than oil and plastics.

Heh, they say pursuing technology via steam rather than oil and plastics...but almost any high powered steam system uses natural gas to obtain that steam ._. The only other way I know of making some good high power steam is via coal, wood, and nuke. But even then the technology wouldn't go down that route had these other routes been taken...

But steam punk does have it's aesthetics about it that I like. Can't say I would go around equipped with such gear, but it does spark the imagination : )

People have come up with some pretty fascinating computer mods. Those are pretty good.

I'm a big alternate history fan and I like steam punk a lot. Those computer mods are cool.

The thing that gets me about steam punk novels is that for the most part they insist on keeping Victoria alive ridiculously long periods of time. Like the 2065. Not even a Victoria II but actually Victoria. And England of course rules the world.

I wonder if steampunk evolves into cyberpunk... but then where does stitchpunk come in?

I'm a fan of the steampunk look in hardware, so long as it doesn't actively cut into usefulness.

There was a line of electronics for sale about 15 years ago, called "1930's", that fits well into the same design concept. I've still got one of their (wired!) phones.

And of course, having grown up on the original "Wild, Wild West" series, that too was right up that line. As is anything Jules Verne-ish.

Me too.

Now let's all buy electronic Victorian-looking candles and light up our houses with them.
