View Full Version : Movies you'd like to see remade

Hollywood is all about remaking the same story several times in different ways. There have been some older movies I've seen lately that are rather outdated, but the story is solid and could use a modern remake.
Wirk and I have been talking about this lately, and while we agree there are several movies that did not deserve to see the screen even in their original incarnation, some of the bad movies of 20+ years ago could be good a second time around if done well.
1. Ladyhawke. The current version is very, very dated. But who doesn't love Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer? The story foundation is solid with politics, love, and betrayal at the heart of it. This could be more in depth in a remake. The music is terrible, which I guess is true of almost all mid 80s movies.
2. Flash Gordon. Has anyone watched this recently? Omgs, so freakin bad! But a good remake could revive the story. It could be a little darker (ok, a lot), more modern, and a LOT less cheesy. Could even work in a couple of different Queen songs here and there.
For example, maybe have Flash (this would of course be a nickname given to him because of his football skills, not his given name) and his team playing a championship game of some sort in the opening scenes. A montage of tackles and touchdown runs set to "Another One Bites the Dust." Have you listened to that song lately? It's a timeless classic.
3. Dune. A little shorter this time, please. But, a fantastic political and fantasy story. Sting could have a cameo, or even play his original role. It's been years since I've seen this, so I have no specific ideas. I just remember being amazed at the intricacy of the story and wanting it in a more easily watched length. Iirc, the music sucked in this one as well.
So, what movies would you like to see remade, modernized, and revived?

I'll have to think about it for a bit, but one recent film I would like to see remade is Daredevil. Take the original comic book story and use that. Use basic and realistic locations and outfits (in the comics, the Kingpin wore suits that were a bit extravagant but which didn't resemble nazi uniforms  ). Lose Ben Affleck. Make Elektra the way she was in the comics, a cold-blooded and amoral assassin, so that the romance with Daredevil could have some depth.
And for crying out loud, lose the idiotic scene where a 10-year-old Matt Murdock, blind but having gained his super-hero abilities, is pulling off a perfect bicycle kick on a teenage bully. And any other scene where the BLIND GUY who is supposed to be trying his hardest to keep his super-hero identity a secret is running around and doing things that even people with normal eyesight would find difficult or near-impossible.

I'd be interested in seeing Harry Potter movies 3-5 remade, and split into two parts like the last one will be.
And the Twilight movie with a different actor for Bella. In fact, scrap the New Moon scenes too, and do them with a different actor. No offense against Stewart, but she made Bella look like a typical, bitchy, "dark" teenage girl only capable of one facial expression. The book was malportrayed because of this fault, but the other actors were quite jolly on the spot.

Robot Jox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robot_Jox) must be remade or at least have a real sequel

They did leave a lot out of those. It would be really awesome if they could follow the story a little closer in the first 15 minutes of OoTP(#5)

The War of the Worlds.
While I didn't mind Spielberg’s rendition, it lacked. I liked the 1953 version better. A better movie could have been made.

Alien 3. Scrap it all, do it over.

No need to redo Alien 3, just need to do a Directors Cut. Alien Resurrection is the one they need to junk.

Alien Resurrection was at least somewhat entertaining, even if the writers forgot that they were writing an Aliens film. The third one was unwatchable. I'd just as soon they scrapped both of them.

Resurrection was memorable for many of Sigourney Weaver's lines, if nothing else. And her general hotness.

I thought the aliens were the good guys because of Sigourney Weaver. I was rooting them on, and the movies didn't award me for my emotional investment.
Next time, I expect Weaver to die, damnit. Hurting all those poor aliens with her gimpy-armed assaults... someone ought to call PETA.

Sigourney Weaver was only hot in Ghostbusters, and at the end of Alien. I hated Alien Resurrection. Alien 3 was watchable, I just wish it was done differently. So I agree on remaking it.
They should also remake Return of the Living Dead. It was good, but it's so damned dated now. Remake!

Sorry to have to differ, but every time I her her, "So, who do I have to fuck to get off this ship?," My hand goes up all by itself.
I said, hand.

I'd like to see The Mist remade, and this time stick to the original story. Keep the special effects and most of the cast, those were fine. And this time, lose the extra scenes of lengthy and useless exposition from Mrs. Carmody, and add the character development and early scenes that are missing. And for pete's sake, lose the "ironic" ending, it cheapens the story and ruins it.

I loved the old lady with the peas. Though I can't truly judge, never having read the book myself.

It's actually a short story of sorts, not really a stand alone novel that appeared in Dark Forces and then Skeleton Crew. But, I guess at 155 pages it could be a novel, just a short one, which they did republish it as a stand alone story, so I guess we'll go with that. I didn't think the movie was all that bad and in reality it actually captured most of the story. Though I do agree the ending was a bit much, I like the ending of the actually story myself. I think the movie is good as is and doesn't need redone.

Wasn't that Alien vs Prdator: Requiem, but just with a predator thrown in?

Not really. What maggotface means is when it happens in like, 2600. AvPR was now.

if i remember correctly, the trailer for alien3 hinted at an alien invasion of earth.
but ended up being one lousy alien dog on that jail planet.

Wouldn't that be Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, but with flying cars and a predator?
Yeah, I think I do recall what Maggotface is talking about now that I think back.

Dune.
I know there are several here who like the current version, but one closer to the original novel would be so much better.

I 've seen the original, which was good, but never the miniseries. Chief says it's good and my mom (a major Dune fan) says its good so I have to go with it being worth seeing.
Any movie inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. I know, I know Reanimator was a cult gem and From Beyond and Dagon are all pretty cool, but it would be nice to see one done with class, not camp.

Watch the Lurker Films Lovecraft DVDs. Very well done. My personal favorite is Cool Air.
