Let this serve as an all-purpose thread for North Korea and their zany antics.

NorK announced that it will "weaponise all plutonium" following United Nations Security Council Resolution 1874 against the country.

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Saturday new U.N. penalties against North Korea provide the necessary tools to help check the communist nation's continued pursuit of nuclear weapons.

The latest sanctions, approved Friday, are aimed at depriving North Korea of financing used to build its nuclear program. A U.N. resolution also authorizes searches of North Korean ships suspected of transporting illicit ballistic missile and nuclear materials.

"This was a tremendous statement on behalf of the world community that North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons and the capacity to deliver those weapons through missiles is not going to be accepted by the neighbors as well as the greater international community," Clinton said at a news conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario, after talks with Canada's foreign affairs ministers, Lawrence Cannon.

"I think these sanctions ... give the world community the tools we need to take appropriate action."

North Korea has responded to new U.N. moves with more defiance, further complicating President Barack Obama's ability to resolve the nuclear impasse.

The North promised on Saturday to step up its nuclear bomb-making program by enriching uranium. It also threatened war on any country that dares to stop its ships on the high seas.

Clinton said the resolution "represented a unified response to the provocative actions" by the North over the past few months. The U.S. will work with its allies to enforce the measure "in a vigorous way to send a clear message that we intend to do all we can to prevent continued proliferation" by the North, she said.

The North's threats were the first public acknowledgment that the reclusive regime has been running a secret uranium enrichment program. In a move that could further escalate the nuclear standoff with the U.S., North Korea said it has reprocessed more than one-third of its spent nuclear fuel rods and pledged to weaponize its new plutonium, a key ingredient of atomic bombs along with enriched uranium.

North Korea, which conducted its second nuclear test on May 25, warned that any attempted blockade by the U.S. and its allies would be regarded as "an act of war and met with a decisive military response."

Cannon said North Korea's recent conduct was "unacceptable." He said he was pleased that the U.N. resolution called upon North Korea to resume six-party negotiations, which began in 2003 with South Korea, Russia, China, Japan, and the United States.

Clinton said the North Koreans "have now been denounced by everyone, they have become further isolated, and it is not in the interest of the people of North Korea for that kind of isolation to continue." The international talks, she added, remain "an open opportunity."

Eventually, our useless SecState may realize that her opinion of "the interest of the people of North Korea" does not enter into the international actions of North Korea.

Probably too late for it to accomplish anything except increasing the body count when the inevitable finally takes place.

And I keep seeing in the headlines "Obama sees NK with nukes as a 'grave threat' "

:glare:

But what's he gonna' do? It's against Geneva regulations to cuss in angry letters, so he's out of options, ain't he?

The only thing we can do directly is sanctions. Stop sending food and medicine and anything else that is being sent to NK as reciprocation for the promises that he has broken.

I know that people will point out that this just leads to more suffering for the people of NK. But this ignores that Kim Jong Il is probably taking as much of the aid as possible for himself. He's taking advantage of the fact that countries are unwilling to suspend aid shipments, even though it's likely that very little of it actually makes it to the starving and sick population.

Indirectly there's not much, aside from finding a way to make China finally decide that it's time to put their foot down and remove Il. But that would entail making indications in favor of a military build-up of some kind, and that sort of move could backfire. And besides, everyone knows that this administration won't fight, so threats of force won't work.

From Clinton to Bush to Obama, we played nice with NK out of a sense that there was not much else we could do. Now it's probably up to China to act.

Naval blockade. Worked for grandpa, works for me.

Make China feed him all on their lonesome.

I'm just wondering if Kimmy-boy has any plan to follow through on his threats.

They're throwing out a lot of threats, and Obama of course is not addressing the issue too well. I truly think he's scared. He was expecting world peace because of his entrance to the oval office, but instead he realized there are actual problems in the world. This two-term senator has no idea what he's gotten himself into.

Obama was not a senator for two terms. He was a senator for two years when he decided to run for President. He never finished his first term, much less a second one.

Am I the only one who noticed that Obama's big reaction to the missile threat from North Korea was to deploy the missile defense to Hawaii... while simultaneously cutting funding for it?!?

Perhaps the Two million dollar grape genetics research will lead to breakthroughs in missile construction?

Any takers on how far the missile actually makes it before crashing into the sea?

I'll place the over/under at 400 yards.

You're forgetting to factor in the potential wind. With all probability added in we can probably safely lower that to 300 yds.

They are gonna wish they hadn't pushed the button when they have 3x as many nukes flying back at them.

Maybe we could deal with this crisis if Clinton could appear on one of their talk shows.

Let's compromise, and fire Clinton at them ballistically. If nothing else, it should confuse them.
