So, I've been pretty much consumed in work and school since mid April and haven't really been able to get the time to read books I WANT to read. So while visiting Florida I picked up a couple books...
The Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs (something I've wanted to read for ages)
annnnd....
The Motorcycle Diaries by the late great Ernesto Che Guevara
Anybody read of either of these before? Oh hell, what might you guys be into right now?

Musicophilia - Dr. Sacks
Working on: On The Road - Kerouack (so far I find it a little disapointing. I mean, Kerouack's language is sweet, but the plot is.. well.. I guess I don't know what to expect).
edit: On the shelf: Fortune's Formula - William Poundstone
Breakfast of Champions - Vonnegut

House of Leaves - Danielewski
second edit: Scarlet Letter does not suck. I wrote a paper based on a feminist read of The Scarlet Letter.

Yeah I liked Things Fall Apart. 'Til I read a review of Heart of Darkness by Achebe where he goes off on Conrad for being a racist.
So, I used his argument against him in a paper.
If Achebe's right and Heart of Darkness and Conrad are racist, then Achebe and Things Fall Apart are sexist.

Currently, I'm attempting to read Frank Herbert's Dune, a book I'm sure a lot of people assumed I'd read already. It's an intimidating read, but interesting so far as of the first couple dozen pages.

Jane Austen is the most painful thing I've been put through as an English major.
I've had to read Pride and Prejudice AND Sense and Sensibility.
Faked my way through the second half of the first, and was the only student to actually read the second (it was painfully obvious), and gave my professor a hard time for the entire length of it.

Any romantic-type books (and pardon me if I'm incorrect; you're an English major and I'm in 11th grade brit lit) are just terrible. Wuthering Heights was one of the most painfuly reading experiences of my life, and I didn't even read Jane Eyre, though it was required.

I just finished Fight Club, by Chuck Palahniuk. The afterword on the more recent editions, where Palahniuk explains how the book came about, makes the style choice more understandable. But if I hadn't watched the movie, I am not sure that I would've read the novel through. The fast-paced semi-stream-of-consciousness narrative can very quickly either lose you or bore you. The book does pick up the pace near the end, but I think it takes too long to get there, and the ending is something of a letdown.
The movie, IMO, is much better than the book. Whoever read this book and decided it would work as a film must be slightly mad. Whoever took this book and turned it into the movie script is a genius. And if those two are the same person, then he's a mad genius.
The primary plot twist is the same in the movie and the book, but handled differently. If you've seen the movie the plot twist is no surprise and the hints that you would otherwise have missed are obvious. But the way it is handled makes you wonder how it will be resolved anyway. Sadly, I found the resolution pretty unsatisfying. Now that I think about it, the way the movie resolved the issue was pretty silly as well.
Anyway, I found that the movie made the book more enjoyable, and the book made the movie more enjoyable in retrospect. I'm not sure I'd feel that way about either of them if I'd read the book first and later seen the movie.

The novelty wears off very quickly. I want to punch the revisionist author in the face. Basically, it is Pride and Prejudice with sporadic mentioning of zombies and constant use of the phrase "the deadly arts". It is lame, and I feel ripped off.
