Anyone check this game out yet? It's a beta event atm so I'm blasting through it as fast as I can.

Basic Idea:
Cookie Cutter copy of WoW on a modern engine
Crazy customizable classes
PUB QUESTS ALWAYS

There are two "factions" to choose from, the Guardians and the Defiant. Rift is trying to break the GOOD VS EVIL mold, and neither sides aren't really BAD, just have different ways to save the world, which cause them to fight eachother. The lore behind it is very rich, but is typical fantasy stuff.

3 races per faction (at the moment at least, remember it's in beta), and it seems like each race strongly favors a certain "calling", or class. Those being Rogue, Cleric, Mage, and Warrior. Each calling has a certain fight mechanic, ie Rogue builds up combo points, Warrior builds up rage etc etc. Very typical.

The first unique thing is the soul system. Each calling has 8 separate "souls" to choose from as their starting point. For instance, mages can go Necromancer or Pyro, Rogues can go Marksman or Blade whatever. Very shortly after starting the beginning area (which there are only 2 of, one per faction), you will unlock 2 more souls to choose from out of the same pool. This creates an interesting class dynamic that leaves a lot to be explored.

That being said, everyone playing understands it WILL be explored. There will be min/max spreadsheets eventually with cookie cutter classes to choose, but I think rift helps the typical mind to get over that idea.

Questing is very typical, Kill X, Loot X, Capture X. They try to advertise a better "flow" of quests in that you're never really going back multiple times to the same quest giver, and for the most part is true, however it does fall into the same old niche of questing from the same area.

The quests however, feel like they have more of an impact on the world than any MMO I personally have ever played. Loading screens are updated with story bits based on what you've done, and overall quest sequences play out much more dramatically than a typical game.

The best part about the bulk of the game, to me at least, isn't the quests. It's Rifts version of public quests, called Rifts. These are elemental dimensional holes that can be either opened by a player, or naturally. The rifts will starting dropping off elemental units in the surrounding area. When you approach a rift, the game offers you to join a public group nearby to take it out. There are sequences within the rift area to complete (mostly just Kill A, B, C) and it will eventually close. Rifts of different elements will fight each other.

However, every so often "invasions" occur. These are rifts opening en masse (of a particular element) across a territory. Once a rift gets a strong enough foothold, it will send out invading teams to take over actual NPC towns by destroying a key object in them. Once destroyed, it becomes their town, and a new foothold for them to send out units. Once the invasion begins, a global automatic public quest is given out across the territory, with usual objectives as Close X amount of rifts, Kill off X amount of invading teams. When those objectives are completed, an elemental boss shows up in an invading squad somewhere on the map. Kill them and huzzah you saved the world for another hour. Or let all the towns be taken over, and the quest will fail.

PvP is your typical fair, titled "Warzones" in this game. Certain battle areas with certain objectives, win 'Favor' as currency for PvP items etc etc.

Instances, so far, are typical, however incredibly interesting. I'll leave it at the fact that the first one ain't no Ragefire, and ain't no tank n' spank. You have to know mechanics and such to actually beat it.

I'm currently a 29 Bladedancer with BladeDancer/Nightblade on Server Dayblind. If anyone wants to play during a different beta event (the current one ends friday at 1pm EST), I'm down to reroll.

TL;DR Just try Rift, it's kinda cool.

It's pretty good. I'm a level 13 marksman with saboteur/riftblade, it's pretty legit.

Alright so around 2 days later I can get much more in depth:

Good write up, it sounds interesting.

Whenever I see people complaining about WOW on the Blizzard forums, I wonder if any of them have the spine to build their own game. Some of the guys who helped design WOW (Tigole and Furor in particular) used to bash SOE all the time when they played EQ. You'd wonder if they could do better and well... they DID.

Rift sounds like a group of people who decided that instead of bitching about games like WOW and Warhammer, they would try to make a better one. Good for them and I hope they succeed.

Basically forgot the most important point.

That while a lot of it is typical fair, everything is done WELL. It's polished, its smooth. Network problems practically don't exist, and when they did, they opened more servers. They are really trying hard to create a smooth experience once it opens up into retail, which I think has been missing from recent MMOs and caused their downfall.

ZAM is still giving away beta keys, I don't know if you'd get invited to the current one, but their are two more before release in march.

Yes I agree with MC pretty much entirely. One thing that is actually really interesting is that the game in a lot of ways is incredibly similar to World of Warcraft. For instance, the chat system is almost identical to World of Warcrafts, you type "/1,2,3,etc" for different channels, "/r" is respond to a whisper, the add friend command "/friend *name*" is the same.

Another thing is does really similar to World of Warcraft is the hotkeys, "B" is still backpack, "O" is friends, "N" is talents, and so on and so forth.

This game seems extremely well made and feels almost like a complete game. I'm not sure if they will change the soul mechanic, because I'm not 100% sure if the way you get all 3 souls in the first 4 levels will be kept for the final release. It kind of seems like they just want you to try all the classes as much as possible in the limited beta game play time.

tl;dr

This game is good, takes the good aspects of World of Warcraft, adds many new and great things and keeps the MMO experience feeling new and fresh.

Plays a lot more like Warhammer to me, except there are no open PvP areas that I have discovered. I loved the public quests in War, and the "rifts" seem very similar. The colorless gear and expensive dye also seem very similar.

There was only 1 battleground, or whatever they call it, to test. I do hope they integrate more pvp into the game. I loved leveling via PvP in War and just hated that the end game PvP became very boring, very fast.

I look forward to the next beta next week. I'd actually like to play right now, lol.

I've only just downloaded a BETA VIP key this second, and it's saying I need to wait for an invite before I can get a download link before I can start playing.

So now I wait.

So. Started my new character, a mage as part of the Defiants with Necro/Warlock/Chloromancer abilities, and got to level 11. Pretty sure I have a grasp of what the game is like, from the Defiants position anyway.

The Rift events which appear at common and regular intervals are fun and interesting, but comparing this game's ability to run to something like, say, D&D online or League of Legends, it chugs like crazy. Sometimes going straight towards a destination is an impossibility, and the Rift events in question, where forty+ people can appear and start fighting fifteen+ monsters, fighting becomes painfully slow.

Gameplay feels monotonous, which is rather par for the course... but it feels MORE monotonous than D&D online, which is not a point in its favor. Kill x for x person, get xp and gold (which I have found VERY limited use for) and x item. Repeat ad nauseam.

Skills are rather cleverly put together. I like how Necro and Chloro skills have buffs which can combo with Warlock skills. Really gives the game a sense of balance.

Not sure if enemies you pass by attacking you makes the game feel interactive or annoying yet... probably both.

I have NO idea how to craft anything in this game, and the people they've set aside for teaching have been mute. >_>

Overall, glad I'm getting the experience with the beta, won't buy the full version though because it's a grind without end and I stubbornly hate flat rates.

In a nutshell, yeah. Rift does a few things differently, but the gameplay, graphics, setup, everything feels the same as any other MMO.

At least D&D gave you independent dungeons for each quest.

The team with the most Bards wins. They're HEALERS with ENERGY. Like Rogue energy. As in they never run out.

Haha, yeah. Bards are pretty OP. Trying to kill one or someone they are healing is pretty much an exercise in futility.

It's much more like Warhammer PvP than Wow, except without the awesome low level PvP lakes that War had.
